What God Says About Worshiping Other Gods

Word of the Day: Worship

The reverent love and allegiance accorded a deity, idol, or object.

As I was looking for an image for this post I found some creepy ones of gods that many people worship. I could have used those pictures but I was very hesitant as I don't want to part of any dirty or demonic stuff. The meaning of the word worship is very clear in the Webster Dictionary and that is to worship a wooden stock which is an object and God is not an object.

Let's talk about objects, in the year 2000 I got the opportunity to go back to my country El Salvador and I stayed at my stepfather's mother's house. Well, this house had figures of saints and not frames but statues, so there was a lady who represented the virgin Mary and she had a nice figure from the waist up. I had the curiosity of lifting the dress and to my curiosity, I found out that this statue had no figure from the waist down and it was just standing on a wooden stock. I was not saved at that time but I was surprised at how people can worship those items.

Growing up I was taught that I had to worship a god on a picture whether it was the saint from the town or the virgin Mary. I sometimes would get confused as there were too many gods to worship and was never taught the origin or the history of such god. I am the type of person who bases herself on history which was my favorite topic in school, so I would ask questions as I was growing up and let me tell you that there were never any answers. The only answer I always got is that we worship those gods based on a tradition.

I love traditions but traditions with a purpose, traditions that I am able to explain why. In our years of marriage, my husband and I have had the opportunity to build new traditions with our children some we still have at the moment and there are some that we don't. Traditions are thoughts or behaviors that are meant to be kept for generations and whichever traditions we create now will impact the future generations in a good or bad way

As Christians, we also have to be cautious about the idols, and I don't mean a figure. An idol can also mean anything that would keep us away from God, our main goal should always to please the Lord. In 2 Corinthians Paul is telling the church that he wants them to preserve themselves pure for Christ as we wait for His coming, and he compares us to the bride. For the Christians, an idol or god could be our hobbies, our jobs, our bodies and the list goes on…

2 Corinthians 11:2

For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

This is where God says very clearly that we should not have other gods before Him and He added that statement as one of his Ten Commandments. When it comes to this subject there are 14 Hebrew words for idol or image: gods of silver, gods of gold, as well as those carved from stones, wood, or metal, likeness or resemblance… it also applies to any real or imaginary thought. Basically, God demands exclusive devotion and that is why He says that He is a jealous God. A lot of times our relationship with God is compared to the relationship as a husband and wife meaning that it is an exclusive relationship and that there is not a third person in between. We are loyal to our partners and we should also be loyal to our God.

Deuteronomy 5:9

Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God…

Exodus 20:3

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Deuteronomy 5:7

Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

Trust God and not the idols, this chapter of Psalms 115, God teaches us what the idols are and represent. The devil wants to take our minds away from the true God who is still in the business of making miracles. I am not going to explain Psalm 115 as it is very clear what I would say is that God is real and you can have the confidence that He will listen to your prayers when you are in need.

Psalm 115: 1-8

Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.

2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?

3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.

5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:

6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:

7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.

Conclusion: This lesson will apply to Christians or Catholics, if you are Catholic now is the time to turn away from those gods and worship the true God and for those who are Christians take away anything that hinders you to have a good relationship with your Saviour.

have added some verses down below for those who are not sure if heaven is your future home. Please share with me if you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior through this post. I will be happy to rejoice with you!

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Romans 10:9–13
