Job's Wife The Woman He Loved

Word of the Day: Love

An intense affection for another person or an intense attraction towards another person

There is no name for this woman who lost everything including her children, and on top of that, her husband got very ill. Job's wife has always been portraited as a bad wife or the villain in the story. Not much is said about her in the Bible but if you read your Bible carefully you'll find that this lady had some virtuous.

#1. Fear of the Lord: She was the wife of a perfect man who feared God. If the Bible says that this man was perfect. His wife must have been someone who also feared God. Job was not going to marry an ungodly lady. They lived an exemplary life and were aware of sin and because of that they constantly made sacrifices.

Job 1:1

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

Job 1:5

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

#2. One Flesh: they had ten children so that says a lot about a couple. This lady was a lady who had joy and rejoiced with her husband. Job must have loved his wife and that love was reflected in the number of children they had.

Job 1:2

And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

#3. Suffered Together: A disaster came into their lives, they lost all their servants, their sheep, their camels, and their children. All these tragic events happened in one day, and the Bible says that Job worshipped, what a great man of God! I can't imagine how Mrs. Job felt, these were adult children, the children she had raised and nurtured. I honestly don't think that the financial losses were at the top of her mind. Have you ever been through such a tragic situation? I have not. The closest I have ever been it was during the recession that started in 2009 and lasted about five years for us. I could tell you that as a wife it was hard for me to put a nice face to the situation, but as a Christian wife, my role was to be a supportive wife.

Job 1:13-21

And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

#3. Job's wife failed to be that supportive wife: She tells her husband to curse God and this exactly what Satan had predicted Job would do, but Job instead worshipped Him and recognize that good and evil comes from God. We right away notice that her attitude towards God had changed, she was no longer that lady who had faith in the Lord. Her husband was very ill with boils on his skin and she was probably going crazy because of every single tragedy they had been through. How do you cope with all that? I honestly don't know:( what if that was me? Sometimes we are quick to judge the characters from the Bible and forget that they were made from the same dust we were made. God knows our hearts and knows exactly what we need to hear, Job reprimanded his wife, and sometimes I also need to be reminded of His sovereign. This is the beauty of having a couple who lifts you up when you are down, Mrs. Job's heart was torn apart with agony, she could not bear it any longer and this is why corruption was coming out of her mouth.

Ecclesiastes 4:11

Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour

10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

Job 2:7-10

So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

#4. They Were Blessed Again: God released him from his suffering and set him free to enjoy his life again, Mrs. Job is no longer mentioned in the Bible but her life also gets to be restored. God gave Job twice as he had before, they also got to have ten other children and you are probably wondering why the Lord did not multiply the children by 2. Well, the reason is that Job and Mrs. Job did not lose their children, their children went to heaven and this is where God teaches a great lesson that Mrs. Job was a good lady who taught her kids about God. That day when she told her husband to curse God was one of those days when we simply lose hope and that can happen to you and me. Job remained with his wife and forgave her for speaking foolish words when he needed to hear words of encouragement, this proves that the love for his wife was greater than any tragedy.

Job 42:12-17

And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.

12 So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.

13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.

14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.

15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

16 After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

17 So Job died, being old and full of days.

Conclusion: When the trial comes how are we going to react, are we going to tell our husbands to curse God or are we going to be that supportive wife our husband's need? Keep in mind that Satan wants to destroy our marriages and if we ladies are not careful we could be his instrument to destroy our own marriages. Life happens and there is up and downs and when that happens just remember your wedding wows, and the pact you and I made at the wedding altar.

have added some verses down below for those who are not sure if heaven is your future home. Please share with me if you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior through this post. I will be happy to rejoice with you!

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Romans 10:9–13
